The Barbers' Shop was founded in 1979 by Brian Barber and his wife Bille.
It was originally located one mile west of Gifford, Iowa on county highway
D-55. Constructed by Brian and his family, the original shop had 4 bays
accessible from the east and one truck bay accessible from the north.
Additions to the original shop included making the office bigger, installing
two hoists and the addition of a radiator repair facility. In 1989 Brian
was joined by his son Brian Barber II (known by all as Bub), who was
able to learn the trade from his father and has since attended tech
school and many work shops in an ongoing effort to stay abreast of the
ever changing automotive technology. Bub is now an ASE Certified Master
Technician and Certified Advanced Engine Performance Technician.
After 20 years at this location, and with Brian's reputation for getting
the job done and getting it right, it was time to move to a bigger facility.
In the spring of 1999 the Barbers' Shop was relocated to it's present
location (pictured above) at 1913 Edgington Ave., Eldora, Iowa. This
new location offers 6 bays, two of which have hoists. With the addition
of four more bays in 2002, of which two of those will soon have hoists.
In addition to the move to Eldora, Brian has expanded his business to
include used car sales to make better use of the large front lot and
hopefully to offer a much needed service to Eldora and surrounding communities.
The Barbers' Shop inc. continues to be a family based business to this
day. Brian is spending a great deal of his time locating vehicles for
those customers having specific needs. Billie travels with Brian and
along with Fong-Lie, maintains a selection of consumer goods in the
show room area, including bath and body products, candles and candle
accessories, and hand crafted items and custom sewing. Bub is committed
to the repair facility, and can be found either repairing customers
cars or communicating with customers about their needs.
Brian's oldest son, Mike, retired from the U.S. Air Force in 2000 and
opened Auto Cuts Styling Salon located in the south west corner of The
Barbers' Shop building, offering haircuts or a shave, often times, while
their vehicles were being serviced. Mike also managed used car sales
and car rentals. After his death on February 3, 2004, Bub took over
the car sales and rental and Ray Tessau has filled the barber position,
Available Tuesdays and Thrusdays, as well as Friday mornings.
